If you had looked at my life you would have thought I had a great one. An amazing family, successful career, and comfortable lifestyle.
You would have been seeing an illusion. My family was stressed around me, I was unhappy in my career, and my lifestyle was leading me to an early grave. But I hid it well.

I spent years hiding and hurting, never being good enough, until I accepted my addiction and was freed from the prison of perfectionism.
I was able to recognize the impacts of a life controlled by perfectionism, identified the steps needed to embrace imperfect, and redirected perfectionism in a healthy and productive way.
As I accepted my own imperfections, and gave myself grace, I found myself being asked to help others do the same.
I answered the calling, accepted the help I needed, and prepared myself to help others by helping myself first.

Understanding Perfectionism
Module 1: The Making of the Addict
Perfection. It sounds appealing, after all, what is better than perfect. At least that’s what we tell ourselves.
For some, perfection is self-imposed because of a burning desire to be great, or perhaps we are just wired that way. Others might feel pressured by parents, teachers or other authority figures who tell us that our effort isn’t good enough, that we need to try harder. And for some the pressures are societal, trying to live up to the expectations of others based on what we see and hear around us.
Understanding what or who drives us to perfectionism can help us recognize the power of the addiction and how it gets a grip on us.
Lessons in this module cover the types and dimensions of perfectionism, what research tells us about perfectionistic behavior and it’s impacts, and how personality traits and habits feed an addiction to perfection.
Recognize Life With a Perfection Addiction
Module 2: Life Inside the Paradox
The addiction starts innocently. The perfectionist believes they are doing amazing work, that they are continuously approaching the perfect everything.
But that constant pursuit creates frustration, feelings of inadequacy, or the need to cover for ourselves with an illusory mask of perfection. Our expectation of perfection from others damages relationships. Procrastination and Analysis Paralysis cause missed opportunities. And it may cause some of us to experience secondary addictions, like obsessive/compulsive behaviors or substance abuse.
Uncovering the damage that our pursuit of perfection delivers into our lives reveals the paradox, and positions us to accept our addiction and move toward our escape.
Lessons in this module cover the significant aspects of living with a perfection addiction and how that affects you and those around you, including topics like procrastination and analysis paralysis, fear, over-improvement, self-worth and imposter syndrome, and the expectation gap.
Learning to Let Good be Good Enough
Module 3: Getting to Good Enough
In addiction recovery programs, professionals say the first step is acknowledging you have a problem. For perfectionists it’s more about realizing what we have unwittingly done to ourselves and others while living inside the paradox.
Only when we admit the cause of our addiction, the results we have realized, and the ways we have covered for our self-perceived shortcomings, can the struggle of undoing begin.
Learning how to change your mindset, overcome procrastination and analysis paralysis, and create new habits, allows you to progress from perfect, to good enough.
Lessons in this module cover the things you need to address to escape to excellence, including acceptance of your addiction and giving yourself grace, your mindset and habits, embracing imperfection and failure, and understanding the difference between excellence and perfection.
